Math Studio: the complete guide
Cromagnon Math Studio is a free online maths solver with steps. It has a scientific calculator, an equation and system solver, derivatives, integrals, limits and series, graphing in 2D and 3D, statistics, probability, hypothesis tests and curve fits, matrices, number tools, geometry, finance and a unit converter, and it explains how each answer is reached.
You can type a problem, or take a photo of it and Math Studio reads it. It also checks your own working line by line, so it helps you learn instead of just giving answers. Everything is free, with no sign-up and no paid "show steps" button.
This guide lists every mode, shows how to solve common problems step by step, and answers questions from students, parents and teachers.

Features
Everything you can do in Math Studio
Calculate and solve
Scientific calculator
Powers, roots, trigonometry in degrees or radians, logarithms, factorials, complex numbers and exact fractions.
Equation solver with steps
Linear, quadratic and other equations, with each step explained.
Systems of equations
Several equations at once, one per line; linear systems are solved exactly with steps.
Check my working
Type your own solution one step per line and see where a mistake crept in.
Photo to maths
Take a photo of a printed or neatly written problem; it is read on your device, powers included.
Notebook
Keep a page of calculations and notes, cell by cell.
Calculus
Derivatives with steps
Product, quotient and chain rules shown as you go.
Integrals
Indefinite and definite integrals between limits.
Limits
Including limits at infinity.
Series
Test whether a series converges or diverges, with the test used and an estimated sum.
Partial derivatives and Taylor series
For functions of several variables, and Taylor expansions around a point.
Graphs
Function graphs
Plot y = f(x), several functions at once, and zoom.
Polar and parametric curves
r(θ) and (x(t), y(t)) curves.
Points and data
Plot x, y pairs.
3D surfaces
Graph z = f(x, y).
Statistics and probability
Descriptive statistics
Mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation and quartiles, with a histogram.
Data from a file
Load a column from a CSV or Excel file instead of typing numbers.
Probability distributions
Binomial, Poisson, normal and exponential.
Hypothesis tests
t-tests (one and two samples), ANOVA and chi-square tests, with p-values explained.
Curve fits
Fit lines and curves to x, y data and see how well they fit.
More maths
Matrices
Add and multiply, determinant, inverse, row reduction (RREF) and eigenvalues.
Number tools
GCD (HCF) and LCM, prime factors, base conversion, fractions and decimals, Roman numerals.
Geometry
Area, perimeter and volume of common shapes, from the sides you know.
Finance
Compound interest and loan or EMI repayments.
Unit converter
Length, mass, temperature, speed and many more.
Flashcards
Send solved problems from your history to Study Studio for revision.
Tutorials
Step-by-step how-to guides
How to solve a quadratic equation with steps
- Open Equation solver.
- Type the equation, for example x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0.
- Press Enter to see the steps and the answers x = 2 and x = 3.
How to solve a system of equations
- Open Equation solver and switch to several equations.
- Type one equation per line, for example 2x + y = 7 and x - y = 2.
- Press Ctrl + Enter to solve.
How to find a derivative step by step
- Open Calculus.
- Type the function, for example x^2 · sin(x).
- Choose derivative and read each rule as it is applied.
How to solve a maths problem from a photo
- Press the camera button.
- Take a clear photo of one problem, or choose a picture.
- Check the text that was read, fix anything unclear, and solve.
💡 Tip: Good light and one problem per photo give the best results. Handwriting works best when it is neat.
How to check your homework working
- Open Check my working.
- Type each line of your solution on its own line.
- See which step is wrong and why.
How to calculate mean, median and standard deviation
- Open Statistics.
- Type or paste your numbers, or load a column from a CSV or Excel file.
- Read the summary and the histogram.
How to run a t-test
- Open Tests & fits.
- Enter Sample A and Sample B (or one sample and a value to test).
- Read the t value, p-value and what it means.
How to graph a function
- Open Graphing.
- Type y = x^2 - 4 (add more functions on new lines).
- Zoom and move to see where the curve crosses the axes.
Tips and tricks
Get more out of Math Studio
Type maths naturally
Use ^ for powers, sqrt() for roots and pi for π; 2x means 2 × x.
Degrees or radians?
Check the angle unit before trigonometry; it is the most common source of "wrong" answers.
Learn, don't copy
Try a problem first, then use Check my working to find exactly where you went wrong.
Load data, don't retype it
Statistics and tests can read a column straight from a CSV or Excel file.
Exact answers
Fractions stay as fractions (like 2/3) so you can see the exact result before the decimal.
Revise with flashcards
Send problems you got wrong to Study Studio and practise them again later.
Work faster
Math Studio keyboard shortcuts
Shortcuts don't fire while you are typing in a text box, except Ctrl + S. On a Mac, use ⌘ instead of Ctrl.
Privacy
Private by design: your files stay on your device
Math Studio works out every answer on your device; your problems and data are not sent to a server.
Photos of problems are read on your device too, so pictures of your homework don't leave your phone or computer.
There is no account and no tracking of what you solve.

Troubleshooting
Common problems and how to fix them
The answer looks wrong for trigonometry
Check the angle unit (degrees or radians).
The photo was read incorrectly
Retake it in better light with one problem in view, or fix the text before solving.
It says it can't work it out
Check the brackets and operators. Some equations have no exact solution; try graphing to see the answer.
My numbers came from a spreadsheet
Load the file directly in Statistics or Tests instead of copying cells.
