CCromagnon

Browser extension · free

Cite anything with a right-click.

Right-click a page, a link or a selected DOI, ISBN or title and choose “Cite in Cromagnon”: Citation Studio opens with the reference filled in. The toolbar button opens any of the ten studios.

Download the extension (ZIP)

Install it

  1. Download the extension (a small ZIP file) and unzip it into a folder you will keep.
  2. Open your browser's extensions page: chrome://extensions in Chrome or Brave, edge://extensions in Edge, opera://extensions in Opera.
  3. Turn on “Developer mode” (top right in Chrome, left side in Edge).
  4. Press “Load unpacked” and choose the unzipped folder. The Cromagnon icon appears in your toolbar (pin it from the puzzle-piece menu).

Works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and other Chromium browsers on computers. It isn't in the browser stores yet, so it is installed this way for now; it does not update itself, so download it again here when a new version is out.

What it does

  • Cite this page: from the toolbar button or by right-clicking the page.
  • Cite this link: right-click any link, for example to a journal article or a book.
  • Cite the selection: select a DOI, an ISBN or a title on any page and right-click it.
  • Open a studio: the toolbar button lists all ten studios.

Privacy

The extension only asks for two permissions: adding its right-click menu items, and seeing the address of the tab you are on when you click its button. It does not read pages, track your browsing or run anything in the background. Only the address or text you choose to cite is sent, to Citation Studio, when you click. Without it, the “Cite this page” bookmarklet in Citation Studio does the same in any browser, including on phones.
