Turn iPhone HEIC photos into JPG files that open everywhere: Windows, Android, websites and email. Free, up to 100 photos at once, and nothing is uploaded.

- Use it: https://cromagnon.app/convert/heic-to-jpg (free, runs in the browser)

## What it does

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default (since iOS 11). HEIC files are about half the size of a JPG of the same quality, but many programs, websites and older Windows and Android devices can't open them. Converting to JPG makes a copy that opens anywhere. Safari opens HEIC by itself; in Chrome, Edge and Firefox the photo is decoded by a small decoder that runs on your device.

## How to use it

1. Drop your HEIC photos on the box above, or click it to choose them (they can come straight from an iPhone, AirDrop or iCloud Photos).
2. JPG is already selected. Leave the quality at 90 for photos that look the same as the original.
3. Download each JPG, or all of them as one ZIP file.

Tip: On an iPhone you can stop new photos being saved as HEIC: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Photos then take more space.

## HEIC and JPG compared

- **HEIC**: Apple's default photo format. Small files and good quality, but limited support outside Apple devices.
- **JPG**: The most widely supported photo format, readable by almost every device, app and website made in the last 30 years.
- **Size**: Expect the JPG to be roughly 1.5 to 2 times the size of the HEIC at the same quality.

## Questions

### Are my photos uploaded?

No. The converting happens in your browser, on your own device, so the pictures never reach a server.

### Does a Live Photo keep its movement?

No. A JPG is a still picture, so you get the main still photo. The short video part of a Live Photo isn't included.

### Will the quality drop?

Very slightly, as with any JPG. At quality 85 to 92 the difference can't be seen in normal viewing. Choose PNG instead if you need a copy with no further loss.

### Is the location data kept?

No. Camera details (EXIF), including the GPS location many phones save, aren't copied into the converted files. Photos are turned the right way up first, so nothing ends up sideways.
